Celebrate National Dessert Day, Colt’s-Style

You never need a reason to dig into a sweet, soothing Colt’s Pig Stand dessert—but National Dessert Day on Oct. 14 gives us one anyway! In honor of this delicious day, we’re taking a look at some of our favorite Colt’s Pig Stand desserts and their role in Southern cuisine. Just read on to learn more.

Banana Pudding

Here at Colt’s, our sweet, creamy Banana Pudding is a favorite for many barbecue lovers—but what is it about this delicious dessert that makes it feel so at-home among a bold, tangy barbecue lineup?

For starters, Banana Pudding and Southern barbecue sort of grew up together. While barbecue-style eats were of growing popularity in the American South, it wasn’t until the later half of the 19th century that it really started catching on as a local identity—and it wasn’t until even later, in the early 20th century, that barbecue restaurants would start to cement that identity with signature local offerings.

While barbecue was growing as a popular Southern staple, bananas were being introduced to (and developing an audience in) the United States, first passing through Southern states like Louisiana on their way up from Central America and the Caribbean. This early introduction is what gave the South an advantage in crafting banana-based recipes such as, of course, the comforting Banana Pudding. Moreover, this mild concoction would become an ideal complement to the bolder flavors of barbecue meat being served up en masse across the region—and today, the dessert remains a favorite for this very reason!

Carrot Cake

Though Carrot Cake’s origins are a little less clear, this wholesome dessert is believed to have its roots in a medieval carrot pudding—and, carried over by English settlers, proved a perfect companion to Southern barbecue’s feel-good flavors and community cuisine!

DIY desserts

Here at Colt’s, we believe that a serious sweet tooth can be satisfied even in unexpected ways! Bring home some Colt’s French Fries and dip them into chocolate ice cream for a sweet and savory treat, or serve up Chicken Wing-Cornbread “cupcakes” when celebrating a wing-lover in your life! These are just a few fun, whimsical ways to make your everyday meal a little bit sweeter.

Craving something sweet? On National Dessert Day and all year long, these dishes are sure to please! Swing by or order online today.
